How it works

How Taylor answers the calls you miss

Three steps, no new phone system. You keep your number, forward the calls you don't pick up, and Taylor turns each one into a lead you can act on.

An AI receptionist is a phone answering service run by software instead of a person. Taylor, the AI receptionist from AI Bot Store, answers the calls you can't get to, talks with the caller in a natural voice, takes a complete message and emails it to you the moment the call ends. Here's exactly how it works, from sign-up to your first lead.

1. Tell us about your business

The sign-up form takes about two minutes: your business name, your name, email, business phone and ZIP code. You can also add your services, service area and office hours, and give your receptionist a different name if you don't want "Taylor". Then you pay through Stripe's secure checkout: $300 a month, no setup fee, no contract.

Right after checkout we build your receptionist from your answers and give it a local phone number of its own, in your area code when one is available. The number is usually ready within a few minutes, and we email you a link to set your password.

2. Forward the calls you miss

You don't change your phone number, your phone or your carrier. You set your cell to forward the calls you don't answer to Taylor's number, using one code:

Conditional call forwarding codes (your Setup page shows them with your AI number filled in)
CarrierTurn onTurn off
Verizon*71 + your AI number*73
AT&T**004*1 + your AI number + ###004#
T-Mobile and most other carriers**004*1 + your AI number + ###004#

After that, calls you pick up still come to you as always. Calls you don't answer, and calls that come in while you're on another call, ring Taylor instead of going to voicemail. On an office line or a business phone app, look for the "forward when busy or no answer" setting and point it at your AI number. Our guide to forwarding unanswered calls walks through it.

3. Taylor answers and takes a complete message

Taylor greets the caller with your business name and has a real conversation. She gets:

She also works out who's calling: a new customer, an existing customer, a supplier, an insurance adjuster, someone looking for a job or a salesperson. Urgent jobs are flagged. Robocalls and spam get a polite goodbye and never become leads. If the caller speaks Spanish, Taylor carries on in Spanish (more on Spanish calls).

What Taylor doesn't do: quote prices, book appointments or transfer the call to someone. Her job is to make sure nobody who calls you slips away, and that you have everything you need to call them back and close the job.

4. The lead lands in your inbox

Right after the call you get an email with a short summary and the details, and one-tap buttons to call the person back, text them back from your own phone, or open the full call.

If someone hangs up before leaving a message, you still get an email with their number. Every call, with its transcript, is in your dashboard, where your office staff can have their own logins. If you use JobNimbus, new callers become contacts automatically (see the JobNimbus handoff).

Callers who give Taylor their email also get a thank-you from your business right after the call, with links you choose, like your website or a page to request an estimate. You can edit it or turn it off.

What you can change later

Everything you told us at sign-up lives on your Setup page: services, service area, hours, notes for your receptionist, her name, who gets the lead emails, and the thank-you email. Changes go live on their own. Your Setup page also shows the call minutes you've used this billing month.

Frequently asked questions

How long does setup take?

The sign-up form takes about two minutes. Your AI number is usually ready within a few minutes after checkout, and turning on forwarding is one code from your cell.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. You keep your number. Taylor gets a local number of its own, and you forward the calls you miss to it. Another code turns forwarding off.

Will I still get the calls I answer?

Yes. Conditional forwarding only sends calls you don't answer, or calls that arrive while you're busy on another call.

Can Taylor book appointments or transfer calls?

No. Taylor takes a complete message and emails it to you right away, with buttons to call or text the person back. If you need booking or live transfer, see our comparison of AI receptionists.

What happens if several people call at once?

Each receptionist answers up to 5 calls at the same time and up to 150 calls a day.
